How to DIY Scarecrows for Fall Decorating

Scarecrows are fun + easy fall decorations that you can make with found objects. Include the kids for more creative fun.  I made these for Cactus Creek’s fall window display in our Weston, MO retail shop.

The scarecrow above started with a vintage ice container. I added some tumbleweeds for hair, magnet eyes, a pumpkin nose, and mouth from an antique roll of red tickets. My inspiration came from these magazine pics I pulled from Flea Market Style, along with the sketch of how I wanted to merchandise the window.

Each scarecrow was made from baskets, brooms, antique hardware, crystals & other found items. We had to cut a few things and poke some holes but it was a great treasure hunt to put them each together.

This was going to be the tallest scarecrow and I had been saving this vintage broom for this project.  Brooms are often a good merchandising prop for fall displays - next year I may do a Witch’s Flea Market theme.

This tall harvest basket was the right height, a plastic bottom to cut and fit the broom handle.

The next layers were this wicker mannequin and an antique plaid blanket tied with heavy twine to hold her all together.

I added some iron cookie cutters & an old key chain to make her face, and an antique tool to use as a hair pick.

This gal was next. Basket for a face, antique crystals for eyes, rusty scissors for a smile, and a fern for hair.

The final result... fall fun windows for fall. All of these could be re-created for front porch fall decorating. Have fun, get creative. Stick to stuff you have lying around. The hunt through drawers adds to the creativity for sure!!
