Travel & Light Hiking Outfit for Women Over 50: My Desert Uniform That Works

Tracy (aka Fancy)
2 minute read

If you’re looking for a realistic travel and hiking outfit for women over 50, this is exactly what I’ve been wearing in the desert on the solo sabbatical I gifted myself for 25 years in business.

I packed options. Of course I did. Different tops, different shoes, “just in case” layers.

And then I’ve worn basically the same thing every single day in the desert.

This has become my travel uniform:

It’s easy. It moves with me. It doesn’t require any thought.

Normally, if I were truly hiking, I’d be wearing hiking shoes. But there aren’t a lot of official trails where I am right now. I’m just wandering. Climbing rocks. Exploring. Making it up as I go.

So I improvised.

I’ve been wearing my Amazon lug sole boots instead. They’re technically meant to be dressier boots, but they’ve turned out to be surprisingly rugged. The grip has handled rocks and uneven ground just fine, and they’re far more comfortable than they look.

Bonus: tall boots mean I don’t worry about snakes quite as much.

This is what I mean when I say style and practicality can live in the same outfit. Sometimes it’s not about packing perfectly. It’s about improvising on the go and making what you brought work for the life you’re actually living that day.

That’s the real travel outfit for women over 50 — less about trends, more about confidence, comfort, and adjusting as you go.
